What If the Life You Want Requires You to Change?

Weekly Collective Tarot Reading

The Magician · King of Wands · Death

Sometimes we know exactly what we want to change in our lives, but we haven't really thought about what might need to change in ourselves.

This week's cards are The Magician, King of Wands and Death. And there's something about this combination that immediately made me think about the difference between wanting a different life and actually being willing to live differently.

We can have ideas, dreams and plans for what we want our future to look like. We can even know exactly what steps we should take.

But sometimes we keep approaching those new possibilities with the same habits, beliefs and expectations we've carried for years.

And it made me wonder: What if the thing holding us back isn't what we need to do next, but what we're still doing the same way?

The Magician and What You Already Have

I've always liked The Magician because this card makes me think about recognizing what's already available to us.

Our experiences, skills, ideas and everything we've learned along the way.

I think we sometimes spend so much time looking for what we're missing that we forget to notice what we already have.

Maybe you don't need another plan. Maybe you've already learned enough to try something you've been putting off. Or maybe you're waiting to feel like a completely different person before allowing yourself to begin.

Of course, sometimes we genuinely need more knowledge, resources or support.

But sometimes the next step is simply using what we already know.

The King of Wands and Choosing Your Own Direction

The King of Wands brings a different kind of energy into this reading.

To me, this card is about knowing what matters to you and being willing to take responsibility for the direction you're going.

And I think there's something interesting about that.

Because wanting something is one thing. Actually making choices that support it can be something completely different.

Maybe you want more freedom, but you're still making decisions based on what other people expect from you.

Maybe you want to trust yourself more, but you keep asking everyone else what they think before deciding.

Or maybe you want to build something of your own, but you're still waiting for someone to tell you that you're ready.

I think sometimes we already know the direction we want to take.

We're just not used to being the person who actually chooses it.

Death and the Things We Can't Take With Us

And then comes Death.

Despite its name, I don't see this card as something frightening. In tarot, it often represents endings, transitions and the changes that make space for something different.

And next to The Magician and King of Wands, I find it particularly interesting.

Because maybe creating something new isn't always about adding more to our lives.

Sometimes it's also about noticing what no longer fits.

An old belief about what you're capable of. A role you've played for years. A habit that once made sense but doesn't really support the person you're becoming.

And I think this is where change can become uncomfortable.

We might genuinely want something different while still feeling attached to the familiar version of ourselves.

Not necessarily because that version made us happy, but because we know how to be that person.

Sometimes even the things we want to change can feel like part of who we are.

Maybe You Don't Have to Become Someone New

I think there's an important difference between changing who you are and changing the way you've learned to live.

You don't necessarily have to become a completely different person to create something different.

But maybe you do have to question some of the things you've always believed about yourself.

Maybe you've always been the one who puts everyone else first. The one who avoids difficult conversations. The one who plays it safe or waits until everything feels certain.

And maybe those ways of being made sense at some point.

But do they still?

The Magician reminds me of what we already have. The King of Wands asks what we're willing to do with it. And Death brings up the possibility that something familiar may need to change along the way.

Maybe the question isn't whether you're capable of creating the life you want.

Maybe it's whether you're willing to stop making every decision as the person you used to be.

A Reflection for This Week

If there's something you've been wanting to change in your life, maybe ask yourself:

Am I still making decisions based on who I used to be, rather than who I want to become?

And perhaps:

What is one old belief, habit or expectation that no longer fits the direction I want to take?

You don't have to change everything at once. And you don't have to reject your past to move forward.

But I think it's worth noticing when something that once helped you feel safe has started limiting what you allow yourself to explore.

Maybe becoming more yourself sometimes means letting go of the ways you've learned to be someone you're not anymore. ✨
