Universal Signs & Synchronicities: Why I Started Paying Attention

I’ve always been someone who is interested in the meaning behind things. Why does something happen exactly when it does? Why do certain things seem to find us at such strange moments? And why can something small and ordinary suddenly feel much more meaningful than it normally would?

But even though spirituality and the deeper meaning behind things have interested me for a long time, I didn’t always pay much attention to synchronicities, angel numbers or the spiritual meanings of animals. I had heard of angel numbers, for example, but I definitely didn’t know what all the different number sequences meant.

That changed in 2024, during one of the lowest points of my life.

My long-term relationship had ended, and at the same time it felt like the whole familiar life around me was changing. I was completely lost trying to understand what had happened, why it had happened and, more than anything, what my life was supposed to look like from there.

And that was when I started seeing 5s.

It Started With 555

I don’t remember one specific first time I saw it. I remember more the point when I realised I seemed to be seeing 5s everywhere. At the end of fuel prices, on licence plates, at work and in completely random places. Especially 555.

Eventually, I became curious enough that I had to look up what it meant.

In spiritual symbolism, 555 is strongly associated with change, transformation and moving into a new chapter. And when I first read that, it hit me hard.

Because change was exactly what I was living through.

Not the nice kind of change where you decide to start a new hobby or make a little adjustment to your life. 😅 This was the kind where my old life felt like it had fallen apart around me and I somehow had to learn how to exist in the world differently.

During that time, 555 started meaning much more to me than just a number. It became a reminder that maybe all of this wasn’t happening for nothing. That even if I couldn’t understand where I was going yet, this chapter might still be taking me somewhere I simply couldn’t see from where I was standing.

And sometimes, that was genuinely what I needed to keep going.

Little Messages When We Need Them

I believe in synchronicities. I believe things can appear in our lives as signs, reminders or little nudges at exactly the right moment.

I don’t necessarily see them as predictions telling me exactly what is going to happen next. For me, their meaning is much more about what they make me notice in my own life at that moment.

If I see a number sequence, I might look up its general symbolism. But from there, the message becomes personal.

If 555 is connected with change, what does change mean in my life right now? If a sign is connected with trust, where am I struggling to trust? If something symbolises letting go, what might I be holding onto too tightly?

So for me, it isn’t about searching the internet for a ready-made answer to my life. A sign can have a general symbolic meaning, but what that message means to me in that moment is personal.

What Does Synchronicity Actually Mean?

The concept of synchronicity was made famous by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. He used it to describe meaningful coincidences where events may not have an ordinary cause-and-effect relationship, but still feel meaningfully connected to the person experiencing them.

I’ve always loved that idea because it leaves room for the possibility that not everything has to fit neatly into one explanation.

Sometimes something simply happens at exactly the right moment. You hear the words you needed to hear. The same number follows you through a particular chapter of your life. You think about someone just before they contact you. Or an animal appears and somehow stops you in your tracks.

You can call those moments coincidences, synchronicities, signs from the universe or something else entirely. For me, what matters most is what happens inside me when I notice one.

If something makes me stop, there is usually something there that I want to pay attention to.

What Can Signs From the Universe Look Like?

When I talk about signs, I don’t only mean angel numbers or animals. Synchronicities and meaningful moments can show up in surprisingly ordinary ways.

They might look like:

  • the same number or number sequence appearing again and again
  • an animal appearing repeatedly or during a particularly meaningful moment
  • song lyrics reaching you exactly when they seem to answer something you’ve been thinking about
  • the same word, sentence or message appearing in different places
  • a symbol you suddenly start noticing around you
  • a person, book, podcast or conversation finding you at exactly the right time
  • thinking about someone just before they contact you
  • a coincidence whose timing simply feels too meaningful to ignore

Numbers and animals have probably been the most noticeable ones for me, but I don’t think signs are limited to any particular form. Sometimes it can be as small as one line in a song you’ve heard a hundred times before, but for some reason, that day you hear it completely differently.

I also don’t think we need to walk around constantly looking for signs. My own experience has been much more like this: when something really wants my attention, I notice it.

Then Came the Dragonfly

Numbers weren’t the only signs I started paying attention to. Animals became part of it too.

One of my most meaningful animal encounters happened sometime in 2024, during what was already a really difficult period of my life.

I remember having an awful day. I had been crying, I felt completely down, and honestly, I didn’t really feel like doing much of anything. But my friend and I decided to see each other anyway, and we went into town.

At some point we were sitting there, right in the middle of the city, when suddenly this huge dragonfly appeared in front of us.

It immediately felt strange because we weren’t somewhere surrounded by nature or near a place where I would have expected to see one. And it didn’t just fly past. It flew around right in front of us long enough that I couldn’t ignore it.

So of course, I immediately had to look up what a dragonfly meant. 😅

Dragonflies are often associated in spiritual symbolism with change, transformation, adaptability and seeing things from a different perspective.

And once again, it felt like exactly the reminder I needed.

That day, I was having such a hard time seeing beyond how I felt right then. And suddenly, in the middle of a completely ordinary day in the city, there was this huge dragonfly reminding me of change while I was still living through one of the hardest parts of it.

That moment stayed with me so strongly that I later had a dragonfly tattooed on my leg.

It still reminds me of that day, but maybe even more than that, it reminds me how something small and completely unexpected can sometimes appear exactly when you need something to stop you for a moment.

These days, if I see the same animal repeatedly or encounter an animal I don’t normally see, I almost always want to know its spiritual meaning.

I keep this pretty simple. I don’t read ten different interpretations and choose the one that fits my life best. I look up the meaning, read what comes up and stop to think about it.

And for me, that’s often the most beautiful part: it fits.

Not necessarily because every word literally describes my situation, but because I understand what the message means to me in that moment. Why did this come to me now? What does this connect to? What might it be reminding me of?

I know that symbolic meanings of animals can vary between cultures and spiritual traditions. Personally, I don’t feel the need to search for one objectively correct interpretation. I trust that the message I find in that moment is the one I’m meant to stop and think about.

Signs Are a Way for Me to Pause

Synchronicities, intuition, numbers and symbolism have all become part of the way I’ve explored myself and tried to understand my own life over the past few years.

But I don’t use signs to make decisions for me.

If I see 555, I don’t automatically think I need to make some huge life change tomorrow. If I see a particular animal, I’m not going to make a major decision based only on that.

For me, signs are more like little moments that make me pause.

What does this bring up in me? Why does this message feel important right now? What could this connect to in my life? Is there something I might already know but haven’t really listened to yet?

A sign doesn’t take away my own ability to choose. If anything, sometimes it helps bring me back to myself.

Tarot has become part of this for me too. I don’t use it to predict my future or tell me what I should do. I use it in much the same way I use signs and synchronicities: as a way to pause, reflect and notice what is already happening within me.

If this is how you like to approach tarot too, you can read my collective tarot readings here.

Why 555 Is in Grounded Studio 555

This might be the most personal part of this whole subject.

The 555 in Grounded Studio 555 isn’t there because I thought the number looked good in a brand name.

It’s there because of this story.

555 came into my life when I was genuinely at one of my lowest points. I had no idea what my life would look like a year later. I didn’t know how much I would eventually change, what I would let go of or how different my life would become.

I only knew that the old life didn’t exist in the same way anymore, and somehow I had to keep moving forward.

Back then, seeing 555 felt like a little bit of encouragement.

Keep going. The change isn’t finished yet. You can’t see the whole picture from where you are now.

During some really difficult moments, it gave me this feeling that maybe there was a reason for all of it. That even though it hurt and I had no idea where I was going, my job right then was simply to keep going.

Looking back, it feels almost like the perfect number for all of this, because Grounded Studio 555 eventually grew out of that change too.

In a way, the name still reminds me of the version of myself who kept seeing those 5s while living a completely different life and had absolutely no idea where any of it was going.

Now I know at least a little more.

What If You Keep Seeing a Sign?

These days, I notice signs more during some periods and less during others. I don’t think I need to see them constantly, and I don’t go searching for them either.

But when something starts repeating or an encounter feels significant, I still stop. I look up what is associated with the number, animal or symbol and think about what is happening in my own life.

Why did this come to me right now? What about this feels important? What could this connect to in my life? What might it be reminding me of?

I don’t think interpreting signs needs to become incredibly complicated. If something stops you and its meaning feels connected to something happening in your life, give yourself a moment to think about it.

Sometimes a sign can also bring your attention to something in your life that you want more clarity around. If that’s where you are right now, my 7-Day Clarity Reset came from the idea that we don’t need to figure everything out at once. It’s a seven-day guided pause to look at what’s happening within you, what you need and what your next small step could be.

Maybe We Don’t Need to Explain Everything

I think we have a huge need to find one definite answer for everything.

What does this mean? Why did this happen? Was this really a sign? How can I know for sure?

I don’t need that kind of certainty anymore.

I believe in signs. I believe in synchronicities. I believe that sometimes something can find us at exactly the moment we need it.

At the same time, spirituality for me doesn’t mean handing over the decisions in my life to something outside of myself. If anything, these things have helped me look more deeply within myself.

555 didn’t tell me in 2024 everything that would happen over the next few years.

It gave me something much simpler.

Hope in the middle of change.

A feeling that maybe this wasn’t the end, even though it felt like it at the time. That my life could still look completely different. That I didn’t need to know how yet.

And maybe that’s why Universal Signs has become such an important subject to me.

Sometimes a small number on a licence plate, an unexpected animal encounter, a line in a song at exactly the right moment or some other perfectly timed coincidence can feel like a little reminder to keep going.

And sometimes that’s exactly what we need. 🤍

Reflection: If a number, animal, phrase or another sign has been following you lately, what do you feel it might be trying to remind you of right now?
